For those of u who don't know, here is a picture of an 8-piece lockpick set:
And here is a picture of an 11-piece Lockpick set:
There are only basically 3 shapes in pick desgn:
the hook, diamond and moon.
Out of these 3, all the others are derived.
The snake pick (curvy S shaped like a snake) is actually a multiple moon put together.
The sawtooth pick (zigzag shaped like a sawtooth) is actually a multiple diamond put together.
The double moon is 2 moons put together. The double diamond is two diamonds side by side, etc ...
Then there is the combination hook + rake, etc.....
There are so many shapes because at some point some individuals found combining the 3 basic shapes in different ways make it easier to rake. But is very personal - not everyone feels the same way. As each vendor come out with their own set, they add some modifications, eg, Peterson company came out with Peterson hook. Another company HPC came out with slimline hooks, etc....
Then there are also various tension wrenches. Each different tension wrenches are used for different keyhole sizes. The short head is used on all padlocks, the long head is used for doorknobs.
The staircase shaped tension wrench is a featherlite tension wrench used for very minute pressure, useful for picking thoses types of lock with security pins.
So far all the literature on lockpick only discuss the use of 2 picks:
the hook and the diamond.
Once u master these two, u will know how to use all the other picks. Because all the others are based on the basic shapes. Remember, you practice on the basics first. Most of the time I use only the hook and the diamond.
Some people prefer the other picks in the 8-piece or 11-piece set. So, u need to experiment to see what works best for you. ;D
